Dramatic transition has taken place in recent decades in socialist countries of both Asia and Europe. In some of them, the economic transition had a stand-alone character (e.g. in China and Vietnam), while in others it was a part of a more systemic transition that covered politics and ideology too (e.g. in Russia). The process of transition is yet to be complete. However, it has changed individual countries as well as the political and economic geography of the world.
This volume offers a comprehensive examination of the transition process, addressing such vital questions as why transition occurred, what different routes it took, what outcomes it produced, what issues it now faces, and what its likely future is. It notices the divergent outcomes of the systemic transition countries and poses the question whether a stable new social model can emerge from the experiences of some of these countries and the countries of stand-alone transition. The discussion of this volume can be helpful for scholars, policymakers, and activists not only of the countries that are undergoing transition but of other countries too. The past cannot be changed, but a sharper understanding of the past can help to shape a better future.
